Have you been a consumer of ad with stock images that do not represent you? Similarly, have you been a consumer of any communication where the graphics don’t represent you? Think about any digital keyboard with an emoticon repository. And compare their palette with Indian cultural motifs. Do you see cane chairs? Stacked tiffin boxes? Indian thali? Or face of Indian women, children or men?
Designers, when you use creative common icons, do you find adequate representation of Indian figurines, temple structures or cultural symbols?
At Auom, we are both the consumers and the makers. And we know that digital icon repository does not adequately represent the Indian audience. This lack of representation has implications in the audience resonating with the communication. It has implications in their limited engagement with interfaces.
THE NEED
A Creative Commons repository of well researched and represented Indian cultural iconography for communication designers. Along with universal guidelines for designers globally, to develop one’s own cultural icons from local environment.
